Importance of De-Mossing Your Roof

De-mossing is a simple process. But it’s one that shouldn’t be overlooked, especially if you have seen the damage moss can cause on your roof. As the weather gets warmer this summer, there’s one thing homeowners in the Victoria area should keep in mind: de-mossing your roof before the fall and winter rains arrive.

While de-mossing may sound like something only an arborist would do, it’s really just a matter of removing moss from areas where moisture could penetrate and cause problems with your roof or attic insulation.

So why should you de-moss your roof?

Although de-mossing may not sound like an important process on a home’s exterior, it can help prevent more costly repairs in the longer term. For example, caulking and sealing the seams in your roofline or correcting a missed spot by de-mossing is much less costly than replacing shingles or even an entire roof due to leaks and damage caused by excessive moss growth.

Every autumn, when the temperature begins to fall and heavy rain starts to reappear in Victoria’s weather cycle, a familiar problem arises for many homeowners – moss growth on the roof. When left untreated, it can lead to leaking and even mold. Moss is formed by spores that attach themselves to surface areas where conditions are moist. Once attached moss can cause moisture to collect on your roof, eventually damaging shingles and creating leaks.

Excessive moss growth is especially troublesome for homes surrounded by trees, as less sunlight reaches the roof to dry it between rainy spells. In these conditions, a roof can be almost completely covered with moss in just a few years if not properly maintained and de-mossed.

Many new residents of Victoria are unfamiliar with the different roof maintenance procedures necessary in our mild and often wet climate. Excessive moss growth is much less of a concern in other colder and drier regions of the country, but for homeowners on the West Coast it can prove to be a costly problem if left unaddressed for long.

That’s why the experts here at Shoreline Roofing recommend having your home de-mossed every few years at the very minimum. We also recommend that homes in shaded or particularly rainy areas like Sooke should be de-mossed more frequently.
