How to Choose a Roofing Contractor

When you need a roof inspection, roof maintenance, or an entirely new roof, you want to hire the most qualified and reliable professional you can find. Even for simple repairs or a new skylight installation, it’s important to have someone do the job right. Relying on word of mouth is one way of finding a dependable company. Barring that, there are other methods of finding the best people to work on your construction project.

  1. It doesn’t hurt to check if the company in a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, any trade associations, or Better Business Bureau for additional peace of mind. A business with a good reputation is crucial; even better if they can provide references.
  2. Check how long the company has been operating the business.
  3. Ensure the business is well-established, has a permanent business address, and has positive customer testimonials or reviews on their web site.
  4. Ask if the company uses subcontractors and if they have proper certification or training for installing the type of roofing material required.
  5. Ask if the roofing business provides a quote, written contract, and if a deposit is required. Make sure you are aware how much of a deposit is required and beware of anyone asking for more than 30% of the total job cost ahead of time.
  6. Ensure the roofing contractor is in good standing with WorkSafe BC, and carries suitable liability insurance.
  7. Roofing contractors who are certified for installing their products often have better warranties and are better trained on correct installation.
  8. Something most people don’t consider is whether or not a roofing company offers 24-hour emergency services. This is invaluable in the event of your roof springing a leak or other unexpected mishaps.
  9. Don’t let price alone persuade you in the roofing contractor you hire. You cannot compare the work of a handyman to the work of a trained and certified contractor. Is the handyman properly insured? Buyer beware!
  10. Does staff at the roofing company return phone calls and emails promptly and courteously? Communication goes a long way in getting the job done efficiently and affordably.
  11. Find out how the business is prepared for working under poor weather conditions.
  12. Ask about warranties provided on work and materials.
